How to Spot Damage to your Flat Roof’s Surface?
While not necessary, it is suggested that you look over your flat roof first if it’s safe for you to do so. There are several things you can look for to determine whether or not your flat roof waterproofing membrane is damaged and if the entire roof is in need of repair. Several key indicators include:
- Areas where the surface appears to be bubbling up. This may be a sign that water has managed to seep beneath the surface and is causing damage to the underlying structure.
- Cracks or tears in the membrane. If there are visible tears, it may be allowing water and moisture to penetrate the surface, which can lead to serious structural damage.
- Discolouration of the roof’s surface. This could be an indication that algae, mildew or mould is growing on the surface, causing problems in the long run if left untouched.
There are other obvious signs to look for with damage, that includes missing or broken tiles and pools of water forming on the flat roof surface.
How to Inspect your Flat Roof?
It’s crucial to regularly inspect your flat roof for leaks and water damage to prolong its longevity. Much like any other roof, inspecting your flat roof requires a hands-on approach, something that we include in our consultation and survey period.
We inspect each roof for any signs of damage, such as cracks or tears in the roofing material, any erosion of past flat roof waterproofing membranes and look for any evidence of water infiltration, such as water stains on the interior ceiling or walls. Our detailed inspections also include:
- Checking for mould and other similar issues
- Signs of buckling, curling or warping of the roofing membrane
- Inspecting the flashing and other accessories for corrosion
- Ensuring the drainage system, gutters and downspouts are clear of debris or blockages
Once surveyed efficiently, if any leaks or damages were discovered, it’s crucial for these to be repaired immediately. If suitable action is not taken, the damage will only worsen, causing more damage to the flat roofing material and leading to costly repairs.
At Southern Cross Projects, we employ a swift and professional response with all our roofing solutions, with expertise in flat roof construction, repair and replacement. Our detailed process ensures that we fix the root of the problems first prior to applying our signature liquid waterproofing for flat roofs.

How can you Prevent Leaks in Future?
The best solution to prevent leaks and further structural damage in the future is to invest in flat roof waterproofing. At Southern Cross Projects Roofing & Waterproofing, we have perfected the application of a high-quality liquid waterproofing for flat roofs. Through our single component polyurethane solution, we apply the industry leading flat roof waterproofing sealant – HYPERDESMO® - to create an extraordinary protection barrier.
This waterproof roof membrane protects from any future water ingress and damages that can be caused, as it’s applied diligently to all areas and crevices of your roof. We ensure that it’s completed efficiently and promptly, with minimal disruption to you, your home or your business.
Methods of Waterproofing
There are a number of methods that can provide you with ample roof waterproofing and protection for years to come. While we exclusively use liquid waterproofing for flat roofs, there are other methods available.
Reinforced Bitumen Membranes
Reinforced Bitumen Membrane (RBM) is a high-quality sheet membrane which is used in waterproofing and damp proofing. It is made up of two layers of bitumen with a reinforcing layer in the middle. The layer is usually a woven polyester fabric or other synthetic material, but can also be made from non-woven materials.
The membrane works by forming a watertight barrier on the roof or wall, incorporating a layer of reinforcing fibres which make it stronger and more resistant to tears and punctures. The two layers of bitumen create a sticky surface that adheres to the substrate and seals any joints or cracks.
RBM is an ideal solution for flat roof waterproofing, working efficiently in areas that are exposed to adverse weather. The fibreglass strands also help to prevent the asphalt from cracking in cold weather.
Liquid Waterproofing
Liquid waterproofing is a process that seals concrete and masonry surfaces with a liquid sealant that dries to an impermeable membrane. The liquid-applied membrane is often made of asphalt emulsion or coal tar emulsion and can be applied with a brush, roller or sprayer.
It is often used for roof waterproofing, as it can be applied with ease and in a prompt manner with no mess, forming a watertight seal that’s designed to prevent leaks.
In order to apply liquid waterproofing, the surface to be treated must first be cleaned and free of any debris, contaminants and damages. The liquid sealant is then poured onto the surface and spread evenly with a brush or roller. Once the sealant has dried, it will form a tough, rubbery membrane that protects the surface from water damage.
Single Ply Membrane
A single ply membrane is an artificial waterproof roof membrane that’s also used in an array of other construction applications. It is usually made from synthetic materials such as EPDM, PVC or TPO.
Single ply membranes work by creating a watertight seal between the roof deck and the roofing material. This seal prevents water from penetrating the roof assembly and damaging the building structure. Most single ply membranes are also self-adhering, which means they can be installed without the need for special tools or equipment. This cost-effective alternative, while a popular choice for both small residential and commercial properties, can result in problems if the membrane is breached, torn or applied incorrectly.
