Cold Roofs
Discover a cooler interior with Southern Cross Projects Roofing & Waterproofing’s impressive cold roofs. Our sophisticated cold roof construction is guaranteed to keep your property cooler in summer and warmer in winter.
Placed below the roof deck, cold roof insulation creates a space between the roof deck and the insulation itself to allow for the circulation and ventilation of air to pass through.
Using the finest timber available, paired with the highest quality insulation, our cold roofs are intricately designed; a process that we’ve perfected over the years. With our streamlined process, the construction of all our cold roofs is completed on-site, created to provide efficient insulation for your home.
Every cold roof project is manufactured and installed by our fully certified craftsmen that will provide quality service found nowhere else.

Cold Roof Insulation
A unique roofing system, a cold roof has the insulation sitting directly above the ceiling’s plasterboard, nestled between the roof rafters, where the rest of the roof sits above that.
This system reduces the build-up of condensation by providing ample ventilation throughout the roof. Popular in cooler climates, cold roofs offer a home good insulation no matter the time of year.
At Southern Cross Projects Roofing & Waterproofing, we provide prompt installation of every cold roof project we complete.
Advantages of Cold Roofs
There are many benefits to installing a cold roof on your property, whether residential or commercial. Cold roofs are also less likely to suffer from damp and mould, as the insulation prevents the build-up of moisture.
When installing a cold roof constructed by Southern Cross Projects Roofing & Waterproofing, the interior will also retain any heat more effectively because of our leading construction process. Other advantages include:
Improved Energy Efficiency:
by keeping the interior of the building cooler in summer and warmer in winter, cold roofs help to reduce overall heating costs. Studies have shown that cold roofs can reduce cooling costs by up to 30%.
Reduced HVAC Costs:
in warmer climates or larger commercial buildings where an HVAC system is installed, a cold roof helps to keep the interior temperature stable to maintain a comfortable environment.
Extended Roof Life:
cold roofs also tend to have a longer lifespan than traditional roofs, as the insulation helps to protect the roofing material from extreme temperatures, which can cause premature ageing and deterioration.
Minimal Height Increase:
because the insulation sits below the roof rafters, a cold roof will not impact the exterior height of a building. This can be particularly important when considering door thresholds and other limitations.
If you are considering installing a cold roof for your home or business, contact Southern Cross Projects Roofing & Waterproofing for a cold roof built to the highest standards.
When you decide to go with Southern Cross Projects Roofing & Waterproofing, you will receive unrivalled quality every time.
Cold Roof Construction
Every cold roof that we construct sits below the roof frame. Insulation is placed below the frame to allow for air circulation.
The layout of a cold roof then contains a vapour barrier below the insulation to prevent moisture from entering the building and creating a thermal envelope. This is sealed by the plasterboard of the ceiling itself.
Once this is fitted the roofing material is installed above the roof frame and insulation. Our custom build process ends with the roofing being protected by a waterproof membrane that seals and protects the material against the elements.
Cold roofs can typically be more difficult to install, as the insulation often needs to be retrofitted after the property has been built. However, when working with Southern Cross Projects Roofing & Waterproofing, we ensure that the construction of a cold roof runs as seamlessly as any other project completed by our skilled team.
Cold Roof Insulation
There are several insulation options available for cold roofs, each one depending on the specific needs and requirements of the project.
Some common options include rigid foam board, spray foam, blown-in insulation, and fibreglass batts. Each type of insulation has its own advantages and disadvantages, but Southern Cross Projects Roofing & Waterproofing are available to offer our wealth of knowledge to find the best option that meets the needs of the project.
Rigid foam board is one of the most popular types of insulation for cold roofs as it offers excellent thermal protection and is easy to install. At Southern Cross Projects, we offer foam boards made from a variety of materials, including extruded polystyrene and polyisocyanurate.
Spray foam is another popular insulation option for cold roofs, in particular with new builds, as the foam expands to fill gaps and crevices, creating an airtight seal where necessary.
Cold Roof Vs Warm Roof
Each option has its own set of benefits and drawbacks, but there are a few things to first consider when deciding whether to use a cold roof or a warm roof: climate, insulation, and structural support.
A cold roof is often preferred in cold climates, as it helps keep the building warmer. In warmer climates, a warm roof is preferable, as it helps keep the building cooler.
Insulation is also important in both cases; without proper insulation, neither system will work as well as it could.
At Southern Cross Projects, we also take into consideration the structural support for the project and the construction of either the cold or warm roof; it’s crucial for both systems. A cold roof needs more support to bear the weight of the insulation and rainwater drainage systems, while a warm roof needs more support to bear the weight of the extra insulation.
While each has varying costs and energy-efficient ratings, ultimately, it’s important to choose the right roof system for your property. At Southern Cross Projects Roofing & Waterproofing, our helpful staff are on hand to provide valuable assistance and advice on any of our specialised designs.
